T5 is another Palm success... November 25, 2004 L. Young (Georgia) 41 out of 45 found this review helpful
I just purchased the T5 after having a T3 for a year and a half. I love my T3 -- but now love the T5 just as much. I agree that one crucial feature is missing: a charge indicator light. I don't know what they were thinking when they eliminated that. However, I can now take my T5 and hook it up to my computer at work (via a USB cable) -- transfer files -- take them home with me (without dragging around a heavy laptop) -- work on them -- and take them back to work. I can also take Word, PowerPoint, Excel files on the road with me and since I travel almost twice a month, not having to drag a laptop through the airport is like heaven. I don't think the price is bad either for what you're getting.
The Good
USB cnnection to any computer to transfer files
Tons more storage
USB sync -- no more cradles
Home/Favorites -- fast access to the applications important to you
Beautiful hi res screen as in the T3
Built-in Bluetooth
Flash memory so you won't lose data if battery dies
Longer battery life per charge -- less charging
No cradle for charging -- can take charge AC cord wherever you go to charge
I love the new case design -- you slide the Palm in and never have to remove it when charging, transferring files, etc. You can keep it protected and in the case at all times.
The case cover material is exactly the same as the T3 -- so I'm not sure why one reviewer said it gets messed up with fingerprints. It doesn't.
The actual T5 exterior is gunmetal -- slightly darker than the T3. But a great feel in your hand and very sleek.
The T5 is slightly heavier than the T3 -- but almost unoticeable.
The Bad
No light to indicate charging!
No voice recorder -- but I never used the one on the T3 so it makes no difference to me. But if this is something you use a lot -- then it's a negative.
I do miss the T3 stylus -- spring loaded. We are now back to the traditional stylus of old but I can live with it.
I think Palm did a superb job with the T5 and I haven't had any problems with it freezing up or malfunctioning. I've been syncing, transferring files, etc. with no issues whatsoever. I never had any issues with the T3 either -- except when loading third party games. I would stay away from those. I use my Palm mostly for work -- if you want a PDA just to play games, I'd look elsewhere or stick to the Palm games.
Thanks, Palm, for making my life easier!
Best Palm OS device I've ever owned May 15, 2005 LGM (New York, New York United States) 20 out of 21 found this review helpful
I've had the T5 for a month now and can honestly say it's the best Palm OS device I've ever owned. I've owned 2 color hi-res Clies before this. What I really like about the T5:
*Great color screen. The clarity and brightness is better than the ones on my Clies. I've yet to see a PDA with a better color screen than this. Go to a retail store and check it out for yourself in person. It's fantastic.
*Large internal drive. It's great to have the extra internal memory in addition to the ability to use an external card. It's live having two card slots. This way I can still keep a lot of apps on the handheld while swapping out the external card for movies or playing MP3s.
*Plays movies beautifully. There is a free player for Palm OS devices on the net called TCPMP. It does a great job of playing movies on my T5. I just love it. To convert regular DVD movies for my T5, I use Pocket DVD Studio.
*Non-volatile memory. I just hated losing all my data with my Clies whenever the battery drained or I had to do a hard reset. And this used to happed with regularity. With the T5's flash memory, data is retained on battery drains, though not on a hard reset. The good news is that in over a month of use, I've never had to do a single hard reset. Soft resets, yes. But not one single hard reset. So this is the most stable my data has ever been on a handheld.
I like the T5 much better than the clunky slider design of the T3 which annoys me. Some complain about the design and finish on the T5, but to me the design is sleek and stylish. And I can't see anything cheap or flimsy with the finish. It feels solid and well-made in my hands.
The T5 is not perfect. There is a slight hiss in the audio, which is otherwise of excellent quality (loud, clear etc.). The hiss is most noticeable when you wear the in-ear bud type headphones. So I simply use my external type compact headphones with my T5 and all is good. Still, this is something that PalmOne shouldn't have overlooked.
Another thing to be careful about is the new file system the T5 uses, which is a little more finicky than older Palm OS systems. Some apps simply won't work well with it. However, I put well over 50 apps on my T5, and only about 3 or 4 I had to remove because of incompatibility. If you get a T5, make sure you do a clean install of all your apps, one by one, testing each as you go along. That's the only way you can weed out the apps that won't play well the T5. This is what I did and while I may have to do a soft reset now and then, I never have the need for hard resets.
If you have the patience to do a clean install like this, you should end up with a T5 like mine -- a relatively stable device that handles MP3s, movies, and graphics beautifully,in addition to doing all the traditional things a Palm device should!
The T5 works great in many ways October 10, 2005 Birgit 14 out of 15 found this review helpful
I owned the original Palm Pilot and have been a Palm fan ever since. I've had the T5 for about 3 months, and per the recommendations of Brighthand forum members, I updated the firmware to Version 1.1 (found on the Palm site).
So far, I can only say good things about the T5. The ability to load short movie clips on the device as well as share pictures from my laptop's photo library is simply cool. The unit works great with various aftermarket software, e.g., 3nity(password database), DateBk5 and Launcher X. I can also use the IR feature to wirelessly print memo's on my Canon i80 printer.
The Best feature, IMO, is Bluetooth. The T5 Bluetooth works great with the MarkSpace/MissingSync application. I can easily share the internet through my computer's DSL (not necessary, but fun !) and to sync to my address book and calendar (one less cable is nice).
Just recently, I started to use the device as a navigation system in my car, using a Bluetooth GPS receiver (Globalsat BT-338) and Mapopolis mapping software, it makes the T5 all the more valuable and it works flawlessly.
Using Bluetooth and my Moto v551, the T5 can also be used to check e-mail. Since I can't access personal e-mail at my work, I can use the T5 to send and receive messages and, browse the internet anywhere I have my phone (no WiFi needed).
It is RICH in features, the processing speed is great, and I'm just beginning to take advantage of the additional space.
Palm still delivers in my book.
Perfect for what I need plus extra's July 19, 2005 GE 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
With the new free ROM software update this palm is really an awesome device. When it first came out people (including me) expected it to have wifi and when it didn't many where quite upset. I don't have a lot of occasions to use wifi, but when I do, I have a case that can hold the wifi card so I just pop it in. I don't know what the range of the wifi card is but I haven't had any problems making a connection. I have often found that even when I am in a location where I can use the wifi I don't tend to take advantage of it for very long so the inconvenience of having to change out the card is fairly minor. Most days I don't even bother taking the wifi card with me anymore so I have just been using the flip case that the T5 came with.
Something else to note is the flash drive. I used to carry a flash drive with me but it was annoying to always have one more thing to carry with me. It has been really nice having a built in flash drive on the palm. This is not, however, a perfect replacement for my flash drive (also called a jump drive). I have to use the hot sync cable that comes with the palm for it to work. I bought the cradle so now I can sync at home and at work. If I want to drop some files to someone else's computer I have to carry the cable with me to that computer. I have only had to do this once and it was very easy to do (the computer thought my palm was another hard drive without my having to load any software).
The display is incredible; having Word, Excel, and PowerPoint on my T5 has turned my Palm into a laptop replacement (combined with their universal keyboard - which, by the way, is a full sized keyboard that fits into my pocket). I love how small the T5 is and how well everything is layed out. The wide screen mode is perfect for the web, the Microsoft Office programs, and using multimedia like movies. I can listen to MP3 files (with or without a headset) while working on a Word document with the T5 sitting in it's keyboard and I have the option of plugging it into the wall so I can go all day. I could even put the wifi card in and check my e-mail or surf the web in this setup - very cool.
The calendar, contacts, memos, etc., seem to all have nice improvements and with the new ROM update everything seems to work flawlessly. This Palm is versatile enough to meet any need or want I have thrown at it.
Everything I need in a PDA August 18, 2005 Sk8-4-Fun (NC USA) 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
I upgraded my m515 with this purchase and couldn't be more pleased. I am astounded by the speed of the processor on this T5! I run a couple of pharmacy programs and a spanish-english dictionary and they are running very smoothly. The dictionary is on an SD card and on the m515, it was very S L O W. Not so on the T5. The only problem I have had so far, is on initial sync I got a Fatal Error and had to reboot and the Fatal Error repeated one other time, but I pressed the Reset "key" and all was well. I have had to get used to the newer version of Graffiti as I have been a Palm user for about 4 years, but I find that it is much more user friendly than original Graffiti. This Palm is loaded with MP3 (which I haven't tried out, yet) and Documents to Go...which is a great application for all those procedural notes I have to keep up with at work...just type them on your PC and either sync or use the file transfer and there it is on your PDA. If you are looking to upgrade from an older version, this is a great piece of equipment.
