best star trek game ever made February 27, 2010 Mr Demondedje (Quebec) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
continuity of voyager timeline , countless references to actual star trek lore , outstanding graphics and character customisation , a must have if you are star trek enthusiast or even mild amateur , it's like watching an episode but you play in it.

Very fun space battles, familiar faces, places, items and planets. Unlike playing WOW where you don't really know the story with StarTrek if you wateched the original series, the next generation, voyager, enterprise, deap space nine and saw all of the movies they you will feel right at how with this MMO. The space engagements are epic and grand and the ground battles are intense!
Fun and Unique Mulitplayer Online Game February 4, 2010 Libertinus (Pacific Northwest, USA) 12 out of 20 found this review helpful
I've been impressed with Star Trek Online (STO). I've been playing it since the head start early release on Jan. 29, 2010 and it has exceeded my expectations. I have been playing World of Warcraft (WoW) several years and was looking for a new game to play at least until the next expansion for WoW comes out later this year. STO offers both space and ground combat and I'm finding this game's play style and theme to be unique enough from other MMO (Massively Multiplayer Online) games that it could be a game played in addition to World of Warcraft rather than a replacement. In other words, I don't have the feeling I'm doing the same thing I've been doing in other games. Star Trek Online is a new release so there will be a lot of additional content added over the coming months (and probably years) so you can expect the game to grow as you continue to learn it.
I know some have complained because they feel it isn't a 'true' MMO because it's highly instanced, meaning that most game play limits you to no more than 50 players at time working in the same area. However, this also avoids the lag (incredibly slow game response) you encounter in games like World of Warcraft in areas where there are many players at one time (e.g. Dalaran). In a non-instanced area with large player populations you wait for information from the server to tell your graphics card where everyone else in the area is and what they are doing. Since there could be a hundreds of people in motion in an area your computer constantly needs to wait for information from the server before it can update your screen. While the wait time for each person alone is not noticeable, the time for hundreds can be not only noticeable but very irritating. Most MMOs, including World of Warcraft, create instanced play where groups can function well for game play and leave the uninstanced areas for socializing. World of Warcraft's instances are limited to 5, 10, 25, & 40 players so the 50 player limit in Star Trek Online isn't restrictive to game play. At this point I'm not finding areas where huge numbers of players are playing and I don't miss it. And in one way Star Trek Online is more of an MMO than others. Other MMOs use Realms or multiple server clusters to run the game. If you have friends who are playing on those MMOs and want to start playing with them you need to be sure they are on the same Realm as you. Star Trek Online is using just one server cluster so everyone who plays STO can group with anyone else that plays it without worrying about what server they are on.
The Star Trek movies and television series have created a rich heritage for its fans. Star Trek Online maintains that long history including recognition of the alternate reality created in the most recent Star Trek movie.
I've found graphic resolution to be excellent while maintaining compatibility with a wide range of PC equipment. To the best of my knowledge the character creation tool is the best available giving you an incredible amount of control as to how your characters look. You also have the ability to customize the look of your spaceships. Like other MMOs you will level up your character by doing tasks or episodes and many of these will be repeatable and you will need to repeat them to earn the skills needed to reach new levels. As for criticism of the profession system, I don't care for professions much in MMOs and at this early stage have found it refreshing that professions don't seem to be intended to waste huge amounts of time in Star Trek Online.
If this game sounds like a game you would enjoy I don't see any reason to wait. While there will definitely be additions and improvements added in the future that is true for the life of any MMO and that is one of the things that makes players want to play the same MMO for years. The only time an MMO doesn't continue to evolve is when it is about ready to shut down. So don't wait just because someone is telling you there will changes down the road. I know there are some people who played the Beta who were quite upset the developers did not make the changes the Beta players wanted before the game was released. But frankly from what I've read on the forums about some of the things those people wanted I'm glad they weren't added.
Awesome MMO - not just for trekkies! March 7, 2010 Stonecutter (USA) 3 out of 6 found this review helpful
This game has way exceeded my expectations...over the last 5 years, I've played every single AAA MMO that's come out, even if it's not really my favorite subject matter. I'm into sci-fi, and sure, I've watched most of the Star Trek shows but I definitely wouldn't call myself a trekkie.
The mixture of ship and ground combat is really nice as it breaks up the game quite a bit, and is done in a way that makes sense...the ground combat is WAY better than Tabula Rasa was, and is along the lines of Global Agenda. It's definitely a LOT more action oriented than WOW at early levels or most fantasy MMOs. There's a ton going on even at level 1...you don't feel like you are being punished for being low level.
The ship combat is AMAZING. I've played a ton of spaceship video games, and they nailed it. It's the best space combat system I've seen since the x-wing series. Visually very rewarding and very well executed with moments that make you sweat. Cryptic deserves a huge round of applause for such a well executed space combat sim. It would definitely appeal to anyone that was interested in sci-fi combat, even if you had never heard of Star Trek.
Customization of everything is possible right from the beginning. Even your NPCs can be completely tailored to your liking, complete with a bio. There are tons of ship possibilities even before you fly for the first time.
The loot system is good, with upgrades metered out just fast enough to keep you interested, but not so fast that the game seems easy.
Overall, this is the best MMO I've played right out of the gate. Not sure if it will last, but even if I get 2-3 months out of it, I'll be quite pleased. I'm sure I'll play it a lot longer than LOTRO, WAR or AION (grindcrap!!)
I highly recommend this game to any sci-fi fan, even if you have no idea what Star Trek is.
The fact is that it is full of addicting fun and will definitely keep you interested for a while.
