Norton 360 V.4 - Awesome! March 17, 2010 mkfisher (Southeast, USA) 29 out of 33 found this review helpful
Having used both free antivirus and spyware applications, and also McAfee and several versions of Norton, I love Norton 360 and wouldnt use anything else. It has worked very well for me - and starting with last years V.3, they enhanced it a lot AND have cut down - practically eliminated - the resource hogging. Set your Norton 360 V.4 up and it will work for you safely and quietly. It has intercepted many dangerous items that I had no idea about until I looked into my history or printed my report. I highly recommend this product to anyone, but don't take my word for it - you can try it before you buy it - download the trial from Symantec and see for yourself :-)

I've used norton 360 for the past three years now, and loved how all versions are very easy and hands off. This norton runs while your system is in idle. You can also run an extra scan when you want. Also you can clean up your registry using this version. I don't even have to worry with this software. It blocks Trojans and scans downloads before you download. Version 3.0 didn't even do that. I've run the 3.0 and 2.0 on vista and XP with no problems. This 4.0 version i've run on both widows 7 and vista without any problems. The vista laptop is 2 years old and the two windows 7 are under a few months. I prefer norton over any other antivirus. All my hp have norton trial pre-loaded and it's what i trust too. I tried norton internet security and it didn't do half the stuff norton 360 does. They've made drastic improvements to this version.
Strong case for the best security software available. April 13, 2010 Sean Marrone (Shanti on a mountain) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
If you have read any of my other reviews you know that for internet security software I am a proponent of the Bitdefender line of products. This has been the case because I have only used McAfee and Trend Micro, both I lament. Because the security software should, at least marginally, be effective at eliminating and preventing most threats with viruses and spyware, I feel safe with just one program installed. Moreover, it should not be the case that one product is vastly superior to the other in terms of the latter. I review security products based mainly on 1. integrated functions--ease of use and how helpful they are, 2. compatibility with my operating system, 3. the use of resources required for it to run on my computer--how fast or slow does it make my computer, and 4. miscellaneous (time of install, overall look, knowledge required; among other things).

So on the above basis I am giving Norton 360 a resounding five stars. Norton is the leading company in antivirus and it shows in its execution and polish. Here are some things that I liked about it:
INSTALLATION
This program installed within five minutes (updates and all). It did not require a restart and caught up with lost time with one update, instead of multiple little ones. There are very few windows to go through and allows a quick startup.
RESOURCE USAGE
As of now, it is using a total of 45mb of page memory. This is very low, and nothing on my computer feels any different after installing this program. Internet works the same, opening programs are the same and it feels as if it is not running at all.
FUNCTIONS
An easy to navigate through menu that offers many *helpful* tools to check on your computer, or help protect it. To expand on this: you have the option of doing a PC Tuneup, which includes getting a summary of every running process (and amount of memory being used), clearing unneeded memory, cleaning up broken registry files, and getting a Norton exclusive Insight report. The latter being a list of all the running processes or installed programs that are currently being used by the Norton community (they give you the amount of users using it, and whether or not it is considered safe). Moreover, it will allow you to adjust what processes will run, even if they are safe, so that you can speed up your computer even more. So aside from being a firewall, anti-virus, and spy-ware powerhouse, it offers a plethora of options to clean and optimize your computer. For me this program is an "all-in-one", hence the 360, type of program.
Also, the program offers the more advanced menus (mainly on firewall adjustments) that will fit the user who wants more of a customized behavior.
COMPATIBILITY
I am running Windows 7 64-bit (the worst kind for programs at the moment) and I have not encountered any problems or bugs. The Norton version I installed was not a "made for 64-bit" but a universal installer type of CD. This is good because you do not have to worry whether you are installing the right one, whether or not you install the wrong one (which may interfere with programs) and having the inconvenience of uninstalling and reinstalling. If this works on Win 7 64-bit then you can be sure it should work on all versions past XP.
As a long time Bitdefender advocate, while pushing Norton off as an overhyped, overpriced product, I feel that through a more steady performance and superior integrated tools that Norton 360 wins out. The only drawback would be the 60 dollar price tag, which only includes a 1 year subscription. However, if you want the best, you would do well to look towards Norton 360.
the only question left is whether you need the extra features in 360 April 21, 2010 fatmav 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Performance: I do not feel any noticeable slowdown after installing Norton 360 v4 on my two year old XP Core 2 Duo laptop. The installation process itself was a snap as well. This experience really convinced me that Symentec has reversed an unfortunate trend that started a few years back when every antivirus product started to get bloated and slow.
Detection: While I don't think any consumer reviewer can properly test the detection capabilities of antivirus products at home, let me point out that a reputable independent AV evaulation site (search for av-comparatives) ranks Symentec 7th in its detection test in Feb 2010. Sadly, this test result is obtained only when you manually set the scanning heuristic to high/advanced and the false positive ranking of Symentec in this setting is only 9th. It is also notable that Symentec is the fastest scanner among the 20 products tested.
Features: As some other reviewers have pointed out, it's not clear you need to buy the 360 edition for the extra features that Symentec thrown in over the "plain" Antivirus edition. Many of these extra features have better or at least comparable alternatives, often free of charge. To list a few, (i) firewall: Windows has one built-in already; (ii) spam detection: redundant if you use any of the major webmail providers; (iii) blocks phishing sites: modern browsers do this nowadays; (iv) backup: I believe home users should use an imaging product instead (eg, Symentec Ghost); (v) securely store your passwords: search for keepass on the web. In my opinion the _only_ extra feature that you should decide on is parental control, which is available in either of the Internet Security or the 360 editions. (I am reviewing the 360 edition since this is the edition I got from the generous Vine program.)
Another winner by Norton May 14, 2010 Marino Shauye 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I'm a long-time Norton user and have had my ups and downs with their products. But, this new version of Norton 360 doesn't disappoint. It's easy to install, update, and isn't a huge resource hog. It is user-friendly and I think the most important feature is that it gives you peace of mind that your PC is well-protected.
If you have an older computer, be aware of the system requirements (I say this because I'm one of these people... I have one PC still running {eeek!} Windows 2000):
-Windows 7, Vista, or XP (with SP2 or higher)
-Minimum hardware:
- 300 MHz or faster processor
- 256 MB of RAM (512 recommended)
- 300 MB of available HD space
And, you need a CD-ROM or DVD drive and IE 6.0 (or higher) or Firefox 3.0 or higher.
